CITIZEN moved quickly into July 2026 with one of its most textured recent releases. The new The CITIZEN AQ4090-08A takes the brand’s high-accuracy Eco-Drive formula and pairs it with an indigo-dyed Tosa washi paper dial whose soft, mist-like pattern is different on every watch.

Design and materials
The visual hook is the dial. CITIZEN says the paper is wrapped around a tube, tied with string and repeatedly dyed with indigo using a traditional pole-wrap shibori method, creating fine wrinkles and uneven tonal transitions that evoke morning mist. Around that dial, the 40 mm case is made from Super Titanium with a bright Duratect Platinum treatment, while the black leather strap keeps the watch more dressy than sporty.
Technical specifications
Inside is Caliber A060, an Eco-Drive movement rated to plus or minus five seconds per year. The spec sheet also includes a perpetual calendar, independent hour-hand adjustment, impact detection, hand correction and a 10 bar water-resistance rating. CITIZEN lists the case at 40.0 mm wide and 12.2 mm thick, with August 2026 scheduled as the launch window.
Horomag comment
This is not the loudest summer release in horology, but it may be one of the more convincing examples of how CITIZEN keeps Japanese craft central to a modern technical platform. The limited run of 200 pieces worldwide and the projected USD 3,000 price should also make AQ4090-08A one of the more approachable entries in the high-accuracy The CITIZEN line.
